A harmonic balancer is built to absorb the twisting vibrations produced by the rotating crankshaft. It uses a hub that bolts directly to the crankshaft, an elastomer or fluid damping layer, and a grooved outer ring that drives the belt. As that damping layer ages it can let the outer ring shift, throwing off belt alignment and, if left unchecked, stressing the crankshaft.
