When you press the pedal, the caliper squeezes the pads against the rotor's braking surfaces. The resulting friction slows the wheel and turns the vehicle's motion into heat. Over time that contact wears the rotor, and heat can leave the surface uneven.
Signs a rotor may need replacing include a pulsing brake pedal, steering-wheel vibration when braking, deep grooves or scoring on the braking surface, and grinding noises. These symptoms can have other causes, so inspect the brake system before replacing parts. If a worn front rotor is the cause, this part replaces it.
