Mechanically, the solenoid regulates oil pressure to the camshaft phasors (camshaft sprockets), which in turn set the engine's valve timing.

- Housed in an aluminum cover: The Variable Timing Control cover is aluminum and contains the solenoid valve; it mounts to the engine's Timing Chain Case Front Cover, which encapsulates the Variable Timing Gear (camshaft phasor).
- Controls oil flow: Meters oil pressure to the camshaft phasors mounted to the camshaft to control valve timing.
