In the rear axle, differential bearings support the differential case and allow it to rotate while carrying the loads from the ring and pinion gears. As a tapered bearing cone, this part runs against a mating cup (outer race). Signs a differential bearing may need replacing include a whine, growl or rumble from the rear axle that changes with vehicle speed, or roughness found during inspection. Gears, axle bearings and tires can make similar noises, so diagnose the source before replacing parts.
