This rear differential pinion seal sits at the point where the pinion leaves the differential housing toward the driveshaft. The seal body stays stationary while its lip rides against the rotating pinion assembly. It is designed to hold the differential lubricant in and help block outside contamination.
Signs this part may need replacing: lubricant seeping from the front of the differential near the driveshaft yoke, an oily film on the housing or underbody, or a dropping differential fluid level. If a worn pinion seal is the source of the leak, this seal replaces it. Pinion nut and bearing preload procedures vary by axle, so follow the vehicle service information during installation.
