This is Lift-O-Mat by Stabilus. A longitudinal groove — a velocity manifold — is pressed into the tube wall so gas flows around the piston with extension speed and damping tuned for this application; the groove narrows toward the end of the stroke for a gentle, controlled stop. If a worn support that lets the hood drift down or fails to hold it open is your issue, this replaces it. For best results, replace in pairs.
