This is Stabilus's Lift-O-Mat design, which uses a longitudinal groove (a velocity manifold) pressed into the tube wall to let gas flow around the piston, tuning the extension speed and damping for this specific application. The groove profile gradually narrows toward the end of the stroke for a gentle, controlled stop with minimal impact.
