A clockspring (spiral cable) is the coiled ribbon-cable connector that keeps a continuous electrical path between the fixed steering column and the rotating steering wheel, so the driver-side air bag, horn, and any wheel-mounted switches stay wired as the wheel is turned lock to lock.
- Maintains rotating connection: the coiled ribbon cable winds and unwinds with the steering wheel to preserve the circuit.
- Air bag circuit: carries the connection for the driver-side air bag safety system.
- Steering-wheel controls: keeps the horn and wheel-mounted switch wiring connected.
Signs the original clockspring may need replacing include an illuminated air bag warning light, an intermittent or non-working horn, or steering-wheel controls that quit. If a broken or worn clockspring is the cause, this unit replaces it.
