Standard Ignition lists this part under both names, back-up light switch and neutral safety switch.
What it does: A neutral safety switch is designed to let the starter circuit operate only when the gear selector is in Park or Neutral. As a back-up light switch, it also switches the reverse lights on when Reverse is selected.
Signs this part may need replacing: the engine will not crank in Park or Neutral, the engine cranks with the selector in gear, or the back-up lights do not come on or stay on. These symptoms can also have other causes, so diagnose the circuit before replacing the switch.
