A vacuum advance uses engine vacuum acting on an internal diaphragm to advance ignition timing inside the distributor as operating conditions change. If a leaking or failed vacuum advance is behind hesitation, sluggish part-throttle response or reduced fuel economy, this unit replaces it. Check the vacuum hose and its source first, because cracked or disconnected lines can cause similar symptoms.
