A whine or groan when you turn, heavy steering or fluid around the pump can mean the pump is wearing out. With the engine off and cool, look over the pump, hoses and belt for wet spots or cracks. A leaking line or a loose belt can give similar symptoms, so find the cause before replacing the pump.
