• What it does: Sits between the clutch fork and the pressure plate. When you push the clutch pedal, the fork drives this bearing against the pressure plate fingers to release the clutch so you can shift gears.
• Signs it may need replacing: A whirring, grinding, or rumbling noise that appears or changes when the clutch pedal is pressed, or a clutch that is hard to disengage — if a worn release bearing is the cause, this part replaces it.
• Service tip: Because the transmission must be removed to reach it, it is common practice to renew the release bearing whenever the clutch is serviced.
