It combines an accumulator with an integral filter drier to protect the rest of the A/C system after service.

Filters and dries the refrigerant: acts as a filter drier, removing moisture and contaminants from the air conditioning system — debris that flushing alone cannot remove, which is why replacing the accumulator/filter drier at service is essential.
Desiccant absorption: a desiccant bag draws moisture out of the system; a leaking or "open" system can saturate the bag within a few hours, making the unit ineffective.
