Every vehicle with an automatic transmission uses a flex plate to connect the engine and transmission. It has bolt holes for the torque converter and teeth for the starter. Its job is to allow for torque converter expansion as engine RPM increases. Over time, that constant expansion and contraction can lead to cracks or shearing, and a damaged flex plate can cause serious, expensive damage. A broken flex plate cannot be repaired and must be replaced.
