A failing or missing cylinder head plug may show up as an oil seep or drip from the end of an oil gallery port, unexplained oil loss with no obvious external leak, or an oily residue on the outside of the head near the plug location. If the plug has corroded, vibrated loose, or was never reinstalled after an engine service, oil pressure in the head can force oil out of that unsealed port. Replacing the plug with the correct 3/4-14 NPT thread size addresses the leak at its source — provided the threaded bore in the head is in serviceable condition.
