Bring hydraulic muscle back to your rear drum brakes with the Dorman First Stop Drum Brake Wheel Cylinder (W78744), a rear-left replacement built to drop in on a long list of 1971-1989 Chevrolet and GMC trucks and vans — including the CHEVROLET B60, C30 PICKUP, C50, C60, P30 and P40, plus the GMC B6000, C5000, C6000, P35 and P4500 ([All] engines). A wheel cylinder uses hydraulic brake fluid pressure to push its internal pistons and cups outward, forcing the brake shoes against the drum. If a leaking or seized original cylinder is behind a soft pedal or fluid seeping onto the backing plate, this unit replaces it.

  • Direct match: built to drop in like the original wheel cylinder on the listed vehicles, matching its fit, function and performance; manufactured and tested for quality assurance.
  • Cast iron body: with a 1.5 in bore, a 7/16-24 inlet thread and 7/16 in thread diameter.
  • Quality materials: EPDM rubber cups and boots for long-lasting sealing.
  • Professionally tested: the bore is surface-tested to provide an optimum sealing surface for the pressure cups.
  • Bleeder screw included; bleeder screw cap not included.

Cataloged in the rear-left position (including upper and lower locations). Most listed applications use one; the P30, P30 Van, P35 and P35/P3500 Van use two — see the Buyer's Guide tab for the full list. Country of origin: China.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this wheel cylinder do?

It converts hydraulic brake fluid pressure into mechanical force, pushing its internal pistons and cups outward to press the brake shoes against the drum when you apply the brakes.

How do I know my wheel cylinder needs replacing?

Signs it may need replacing include brake fluid leaking near the wheel or backing plate, a soft or spongy pedal, or rear drum brakes that grab or drag. Diagnose the cause before replacing.

Does it include a bleeder screw?

Yes, a bleeder screw is included. A bleeder screw cap is not included.

What are the bore and thread specs?

It has a 1.5 in inside diameter (bore), a 7/16-24 inlet thread size and a 7/16 in thread diameter. The body is cast iron.

How many do I need for my vehicle?

Most listed applications use one; the P30, P30 Van, P35 and P35/P3500 Van use two. For even, balanced braking it's best practice to service both rear sides together. See the Buyer's Guide tab.
