As a suspension shock absorber, it dampens spring movement at the rear of the truck, helping keep the tires in contact with the road over bumps and uneven pavement. Signs a rear shock may need replacing include excessive bouncing after bumps, fluid leaking from the shock body, rear-end sway and uneven tire wear. Other suspension parts can cause similar symptoms, so diagnose the cause before replacing. Replacing both rear shocks together is commonly recommended for balanced handling.
