A failing compressor can show up as weak cooling, a noisy pulley or compressor, or oil staining around the compressor. Low refrigerant, a leak elsewhere in the system or an electrical fault can also produce weak cooling, so track down the cause before you replace the compressor. With the engine off, look over the belt, the pulley and the wiring connector for damage; a shop can test the rest.
