Bolted to the bottom of the engine block, the oil pan forms the reservoir that collects and holds engine oil for the pump to draw from, and its baffling helps control oil movement so the pickup stays fed during cornering and braking. A cracked, dented, rusted-through, or stripped-drain pan is a common reason to replace this part.
