It's a direct-fit replacement for the 2011-2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty and 2011-2021 Ford F-350 Super Duty. The seal closes off the opening where the pinion leaves the rear differential housing. The seal body stays stationary while its lip rides against the rotating pinion.
