A high-pitched squeal from the rear, a grinding noise or a car that takes longer to stop can mean the rear brake pads are worn. Worn rotors or a sticking caliper give similar symptoms, so find the cause before you replace the brake pads. With the car parked and the engine off, look through the wheel spokes at how much pad material is left and whether the rotor face is deeply grooved.
