The canister is part of the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system. Instead of letting fuel vapor vent to the atmosphere, it holds that vapor with charcoal until the purge system sends it to the engine. Signs a canister may need replacing include a check engine light with an EVAP-related code, a raw fuel smell, a fuel nozzle that keeps clicking off during fill-ups, or a cracked or damaged canister housing. Valves, hoses and the fuel cap can cause similar symptoms, so diagnose the EVAP system first. If a failed canister is the cause, this replacement is designed to help address the EVAP fault.
