Each pad rides on a steel backing plate. This is a rear disc brake pad set for one axle. For even, balanced braking it's best practice to replace the pads on both sides at the same time and inspect the rotors while you're in there. If worn rear pads are the source of squealing, reduced bite, or brake dust, this set replaces them.
