At the rear axle, the rotor gives the brake pads a surface to clamp against, turning the wheel's motion into heat as the vehicle slows.
Signs a rotor may need replacing include a pulsing brake pedal, grinding or scraping noises, deep scoring or grooves on the braking surface, and a heavy lip at the outer edge. Replacing both rear rotors together as a matched pair is recommended for even, balanced braking.
