A vacuum signal operates the valve, which meters exhaust gas back into the intake of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury engines.
A rough idle, hesitation or a failed emissions test can be signs of a sticking or leaking EGR valve. These signs alone do not prove the valve is the problem, since a vacuum leak in a hose is another common cause.
