The sensor reports the exact position and speed of the camshaft(s) to the ECM. The ECM uses that signal to set fuel and spark timing and, on engines equipped with it, to manage VVT operation. Signs a camshaft position sensor may need replacing include a check engine light, hard starting or a no-start, increased emissions and engine misfire. These symptoms can have other causes, so diagnose the problem before replacing the sensor.
