The flexplate bolts to the crankshaft and connects it to the automatic transmission's torque converter, transmitting engine torque into the driveline while its outer ring gear meshes with the starter. Signs the original may need replacing include a grinding or no-crank condition from worn or damaged ring-gear teeth, or a vibration and cracking noise from a fatigued plate — if a failed flexplate is the cause, this replaces it.
