Standard Ignition Alternator Diode P/N:D-8
Standard Motor Products
Help keep the battery charging and the lights steady with the Standard Ignition Alternator Diode, part number D-1P (also written D1P). It is a direct-fit replacement for the listed applications and fits many vehicles, among them the 1966-1973 Dodge Charger 3.7L / 4.5L / 5.2L / 5.6L / 5.9L / 6.3L / 6.6L / 7.0L / 7.2L, the 1967-1969 Chevrolet Impala 3.8L / 4.1L / 4.6L / 5.0L / 5.3L / 5.4L / 5.7L / 6.5L / 6.7L / 7.0L and the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro 3.8L / 4.1L / 4.9L / 5.0L / 5.3L / 5.4L / 5.7L / 6.5L / 7.0L. See the "Vehicles it fits" section for the full list.
An alternator produces alternating current, and its diodes rectify that output into the direct current that charges the battery and supplies the electrical system. A failed diode may reduce the alternator's output or let current drain back from the battery. Signs this part may need replacing include dim or flickering lights, a weak or discharged battery, and an abnormal charging gauge or warning light. If a failed diode is the cause, this part replaces it. The voltage regulator, wiring or drive belt can cause similar symptoms, so test the charging system before replacing parts.
Product information is for general reference and may contain errors. See our Disclaimer.
What does an alternator diode do?
It is part of the alternator's rectifier. It lets current flow in one direction, so the alternator's AC output becomes the DC that the battery and electrical system use.
What are signs this diode may need replacing?
Signs include dim or flickering lights, a battery that won't stay charged, an abnormal charging gauge or warning light, and battery drain with the engine off. Test the charging system to confirm the cause.
Which vehicles does the D-1P fit?
It fits many, including the 1966-1973 Dodge Charger 3.7L / 4.5L / 5.2L / 5.6L / 5.9L / 6.3L / 6.6L / 7.0L / 7.2L and 1969 Chevrolet Camaro 3.8L / 4.1L / 4.9L / 5.0L / 5.3L / 5.4L / 5.7L / 6.5L / 7.0L. See the "Vehicles it fits" section.
Is D-1P the same part as D1P?
Yes. The Standard Ignition part number D-1P is also written D1P, and both forms refer to this alternator diode.
Will replacing this diode fix my charging problem?
If a failed diode is causing the problem, this part replaces it. The regulator, wiring or belt can cause similar symptoms, so diagnose the charging system first.
