A knock sensor mounts to the engine block and converts the high-frequency vibrations of pre-ignition into a voltage signal, allowing the engine controller to retard timing when knock is present. If a failed sensor is the cause of a stored knock-related code, a rough-running condition, or reduced performance, this replaces it.
