Whining or groaning when you turn the wheel, heavy steering or wet residue around the pump can mean the pump is wearing out. A leaking hose fitting or a worn belt can also make steering noisy or heavy, so with the engine off, look over the hose fittings and belt for wet spots or cracks before you replace the pump. The car takes one pump.
