This sensor reports camshaft position to the ignition control module (ICM), engine control module (ECM) or powertrain control module (PCM). The part is listed under both the engine camshaft position sensor and engine crankshaft position sensor names.
- Timing signal: Tracks the position and speed of the camshaft and sends a timing signal to the engine control module.
- Works with the crank sensor: Operates alongside the crankshaft position sensor and the vehicle's ECU, which use both signals to set ignition timing and fuel delivery.
- How it senses: Uses Hall-effect or magnetic-induction technology to produce a voltage signal as the camshaft rotates. The engine control module uses that signal to time fuel injection and ignition.
