The accumulator / filter drier acts as a filter, pulling moisture and contaminants that flushing cannot clear out of the air conditioning system — which is why replacing it is essential during service. An internal desiccant bag absorbs moisture; a leaking or "open" system can saturate that bag within a few hours and leave the unit ineffective.
