The receiver drier acts as a filter, capturing moisture and contaminants that circulate through the A/C system — debris that can't be removed by flushing alone, which is why the drier is replaced whenever the system is opened or serviced. A desiccant inside absorbs moisture; if the system runs leaking or open, that desiccant can saturate within hours and stop protecting the components downstream.
