The desiccant can only absorb so much moisture. A leaking or open system can saturate the desiccant bag within a few hours, and a saturated bag leaves the accumulator ineffective. For that reason, Four Seasons states that the accumulator must be replaced any time the A/C system is serviced. Replacing it is also required to validate the compressor warranty.

This part may need replacing if the A/C system has been opened for a repair, if a leak has let moisture into the system, or if a new compressor is being installed.
