The shifter cable links the gear selector in the cab to the shift lever on the automatic transmission. The position you choose at the shifter is passed mechanically to the transmission through the cable.

Signs a shifter cable may need replacing include a gear indicator that doesn't match the selected gear, a loose or sloppy shift lever, difficulty moving into or out of Park, or a selector that moves without the transmission changing gear. Diagnose the cause first. If a stretched, frayed or broken cable is behind the problem, CA-1254 replaces it.
