Standard Ignition Ballast Resistor P/N:RU-4
Keep your ignition coil fed with the right amount of current using the Standard Ignition Ballast Resistor RU-11 (also written RU11). It is a direct-fit replacement for the listed applications, which cover many vehicles, among them the 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 3.9L / 5.2L / 5.9L and the 1966-1971 Dodge Charger 3.7L / 4.5L / 5.2L / 5.6L / 5.9L / 6.3L / 7.0L / 7.2L. See the Buyer's Guide tab for the full list.
A ballast resistor sits in the ignition coil's primary circuit. It is designed to reduce the voltage and current reaching the coil while the engine is running, which helps protect the coil and related ignition components from excess load. On many systems it is bypassed during cranking, so the coil receives fuller voltage for starting.
Signs this part may need replacing: The engine fires while cranking but stalls as soon as the key returns to Run. You may also see a no-start condition or a weak or intermittent spark. These symptoms can have other causes, so test the ignition circuit before replacing the resistor.
What does a ballast resistor do?
It sits in the ignition coil's primary circuit and is designed to limit the voltage and current reaching the coil while the engine runs. This helps protect the coil and related ignition parts.
Why does my engine start and then die when I release the key?
On many classic ignition systems the ballast resistor is bypassed during cranking. If the resistor has failed, the engine may fire while cranking and stall at Run. Test the circuit to confirm the cause.
Which vehicles does the RU-11 fit?
It fits many vehicles, including the 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 3.9L / 5.2L / 5.9L and 1966-1971 Dodge Charger 3.7L / 4.5L / 5.2L / 5.6L / 5.9L / 6.3L / 7.0L / 7.2L. See the Buyer's Guide tab for the full list.
How many ballast resistors do I need?
The listed applications use one ballast resistor each.
Is RU11 the same part as RU-11?
Yes. RU11 is the same Standard Ignition part number written without the hyphen.
