The distributor cap works with the rotor to route high-voltage current from the ignition coil to each spark plug wire terminal in firing order. Over time a cap can crack, develop carbon tracks, or build up corrosion on its terminals. Signs it may need replacing include misfires, hard starting, or rough running.
