An automatic transmission filter traps wear particles and contaminants as fluid circulates through the transmission. Delayed or harsh shifts, slipping or a whining noise can be signs that the filter may need replacing. These symptoms have other possible causes, so diagnose the transmission before replacing parts. Filter changes are commonly done during a transmission fluid service. Follow the vehicle's service information for the correct interval, fluid and procedure.
