Hard starting, sputtering or stalling under load can be signs of a weak fuel pump, though a clogged strainer or a wiring fault can show up the same way. Before replacing the pump, look over the fuel lines, connections and wiring with the engine off and cool for cracks, wet spots or damage, and leave pressure tests to a shop.
