The distributor cap covers the distributor. It carries high voltage from the ignition coil, through the rotor, to the terminal for each spark plug wire. Signs a cap may need replacing include cracks, carbon tracks, and worn or corroded terminals. These can accompany misfires, hard starting or rough running. Those symptoms can also have other causes, so diagnose the ignition system before replacing parts.
