The rotor turns with the distributor shaft beneath the cap. It carries ignition-coil voltage from the center terminal across to each spark plug terminal in turn. Signs a distributor rotor may need replacing include misfires, hard starting, rough running, and a rotor that looks burned, eroded, or cracked or shows carbon tracking. These symptoms can have other causes, so diagnose the ignition system before replacing parts. The rotor is often serviced together with the distributor cap.
