As a control arm and ball joint assembly, it links the chassis to the steering knuckle, and the ball joint lets the knuckle pivot as the suspension moves and the wheels steer. Signs this part may need replacing include clunking over bumps, loose or wandering steering, uneven tire wear and play in the ball joint.
